For two consecutive days, intense rains have hit Mexico City, causing flooding in the historic center, Iztapalapa and Azcapotzalco. Authorities activated alerts and deployed emergency teams to address the damage.
On Tuesday, May 12, the rains flooded the Bellas Artes area in the historic center. Videos shared on social media showed how the storm completely erased buildings from the landscape as seen from the Torre Latino.
The next day, a major break in a 48-inch water pipe in Los Reyes Culhuacán, Iztapalapa, turned streets into canals. The Secretariat of Integral Water Management and the borough deployed teams to contain the spill near the La Estrella tank.
In Azcapotzalco, the overflow of the Río de los Remedios affected several neighborhoods. Federal deputy Gabriela Jiménez Godoy distributed food, drinking water and arranged water trucks and a vacuum truck for cleaning while starting a census of affected families.
Authorities stated that the storm system, driven by cold front number 50, will end on May 15.
