The 18-year-old Huilense athlete José David Rendón, a software engineering student, won his third national Rubik's Cube championship in the Skewb category at the event held in Pereira. He achieved an average of 2.82 seconds and a best time of 1.59 seconds. He is now preparing for the South American Championship in Bogotá next year.
The National Rubik's Cube Championship took place recently in Pereira, featuring more than 100 athletes from across the country. There, José David Rendón, from Huila and a software engineering student at Universidad Surcolombiana, triumphed in the Skewb category for the third time.
In an interview with LA NACIÓN and LA NACIÓN Stereo 104.3 FM, Rendón shared his excitement: “It was a very important title for me, the national tricampeonato, which was a very difficult process, a lot of practice, a lot of dedication, and it was something I longed for so much, so I'm very happy and grateful to life for allowing me to experience these things”.
He detailed his times: “I achieved the national tricampeonato in the Skewb category with an average of 2.82 seconds and a best time of 1.59 seconds, really very happy, grateful to God and to all the people who support me to achieve these accomplishments”.
This win marks a comeback for Rendón, who earned silver medals in 2023 and 2024. He previously won gold at the pre-national in Bogotá, averaging 2.7 seconds, which served as preparation alongside home practice sessions learning algorithms.
“Yes, I got the silver medal in 2023 and 2024 and it was an incredible pain, indescribable what I felt because I had fought so hard too, so it was a total relief to achieve the gold medal this year”, he said.
Looking ahead, Rendón targets the South American Championship in Bogotá in 2026, aiming for gold after securing bronze in Brazil 2022 and silver in Argentina 2024. “The preparation is to keep practicing, I have the big goal of becoming South American champion... we hope with God's help to achieve it and start 2026 off strong”, he concluded.
