Judge denies Begoña Gómez travel to NATO summit but allows London trip

Magistrate Antonio Viejo has rejected Begoña Gómez's request to accompany Pedro Sánchez to the NATO summit in Ankara, but has permitted her trip to London for her daughter's graduation.

Judge Antonio Viejo, substituting for Juan Carlos Peinado during his vacation, made this decision on July 6, 2026. He denied the trip to the NATO summit that begins on July 7 in Ankara because Turkey is not part of the EU area of freedom, security and justice and the invitation was for institutional courtesy reasons without active participation by Gómez.

He authorized instead the trip to London between July 8 and 10 to attend her daughter's graduation, considering the nature of the event and judicial cooperation between Spain and the United Kingdom. Gómez must return the passport to the court on July 13.

The popular accusations, coordinated by Hazte Oír, opposed both trips. The Fiscalía, consistent with its request to archive the case, did not oppose the travels. Gómez travels under precautionary measures since May 20.
