Nearly 80% of french see russia as a threat to the eu

A study shows that 80% of French people view Russia as a threat to the sovereignty of EU countries, an increase linked to drone incursions in September. This poll, conducted by Dynata, extends to other European countries with similar views. The negative image of Russia and Vladimir Putin remains very strong.

According to a poll published this Thursday by the agency Dynata, the proportion of French people who consider Russia a «threat to the sovereignty of the European Union countries» rose from 72% in September to 80% in October. This increase is strongly linked to drone incursions in European airspace in September, mostly attributed to Russia. «These events have only confirmed an already entrenched idea», explains Antoine Bristielle, co-author of the study and director of the Opinion Observatory at the Jean Jaurès Foundation.

The study is not limited to France: it includes Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom, where 78.9% of citizens share this view of Russia as a threat. Furthermore, 83% of respondents have a negative opinion of Russia and 85% of Vladimir Putin. In contrast, Volodymyr Zelensky enjoys 65% favorable opinions, and 71% of French people have a positive image of Ukraine.

In the broader context of the war in Ukraine, Europeans express strong support for security guarantees for Kyiv. 79.9% believe Ukraine should obtain solid guarantees, and 63.3% do not trust Putin to respect a ceasefire. Citizens are divided on the forms these guarantees could take: 37.1% wish for progressive integration into the EU, 35.3% into NATO, and other options like continued military support or troop deployment.
