The Mexican government has launched the Gertrudis Bocanegra Scholarship to assist higher education students in Michoacán with public transport costs. Announced by Education Secretary Mario Delgado, it is part of the Plan Michoacán for Peace and Justice. Over 80,000 young people are expected to benefit.
The Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) introduced the Gertrudis Bocanegra Scholarship as a new economic aid for higher education students in Michoacán, targeted at covering public transport expenses. Mario Delgado made the announcement during the presentation of the Plan Michoacán for Peace and Justice at Palacio Nacional, following instructions from President Claudia Sheinbaum.
“The scholarship program expands in Michoacán; by instructions from President Claudia Sheinbaum, a new scholarship opens for Michoacán, and it is the Gertrudis Bocanegra Scholarship whose objective is to support expenses such as public transport for young people in higher education,” said Delgado.
This incentive will benefit more than 80,000 young people pursuing higher studies in the state, with an amount of 1,900 pesos. Requirements will be announced later. Overall, the scholarship program will reach 892,639 beneficiaries in Michoacán in 2026, with an investment exceeding 6,300 million pesos; currently, more than 395,000 children and youth will receive support.
The delivery process begins on Monday, November 24, with informative assemblies at educational institutions, as confirmed by the National Scholarships Coordination in the morning conference.
The Plan Michoacán follows the assassination of former Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo, aiming to reduce violence, crime, and insecurity. It includes strengthening the National Guard, state police, and Attorney General's Office through equipment, training, and intelligence efforts. It also protects citizens with welfare programs, education, and health initiatives to address social needs.
