Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has called on President Bola Tinubu to step aside before the 2027 election, saying the president lacks the capacity to lead amid economic and security challenges.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on July 26, 2026, Obi said the Bola Tinubu who served as Lagos governor differs from the current president. “He’s tired. He should be allowed to retire in peace and then go home,” Obi stated.
Obi argued that Tinubu’s administration has failed to address worsening poverty and insecurity. He noted that nearly 79 per cent of Nigerians could fall below the poverty line, adding that more action is needed despite recent praise from US President Donald Trump.
The NDC candidate also criticised Nigeria’s political parties for lacking ideology. He claimed politicians accused of corruption appear absolved after joining the ruling All Progressives Congress and accused the party of destabilising opposition groups such as the Labour Party and the African Democratic Congress.
Obi called for free, fair and credible elections in 2027, urging youths to demand better leadership and stronger institutions.
