Pnp intensifies anti-cybercrime operations after un treaty signing

Operations against digital crimes in the Philippines are set to intensify following the country's signing of the United Nations Convention Against Cybercrimes. The acting Philippine National Police chief expressed optimism about an enhanced cybersecurity posture from the global treaty. The PNP has ordered its units to strengthen efforts against online scams and cyberhacking.

In Manila, Philippines, acting Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated that operations against cybercrimes are expected to intensify after the country became one of the first to join the United Nations Convention Against Cybercrimes. Adopted by the UN in December last year, the treaty provides a unified framework for combating cybercrime and sharing electronic evidence against digital threats.

Nartatez has ordered the Anti-Cybercrime Group and other police units to beef up operations against online scams, cyberhacking, and related crimes. Information and Communications Technology Secretary Henry Aguda signed the treaty in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Speaker Faustino Dy III urged the PNP to take stronger action against scam rings exploiting the names of public officials and institutions. This move aligns with the Philippines' broader efforts to bolster cybersecurity amid rising digital threats.
