ANFP's Referee Commission, headed by Roberto Tobar, left Nicolás Gamboa off the roster for the 11th round of Liga de Primera. The decision follows controversy in Universidad Católica’s match against Unión La Calera, where Gamboa opted not to eject Fernando Zampedri after a clash with Christopher Díaz.
The controversial incident occurred at the 40th minute of the first half at Claro Arena. Universidad Católica forward Fernando Zampedri was running alongside Unión La Calera’s Christopher Díaz when he made an arm movement that floored the fullback, who claimed a facial blow. VAR summoned referee Nicolás Gamboa for review.
After viewing the footage, Gamboa upheld the yellow card. “Luego de la revisión, dos jugadores disputan el balón, se ve que el nueve intenta ganar la posición pero da una especie de manotazo en el cuerpo de manera temeraria. Mantengo tarjeta amarilla, no hay nada claro,” Gamboa stated.
Unión La Calera players demanded Zampedri’s ejection. “Me sorprendió sí, pero bueno sabemos que esto es así, a los equipos grandes de repente se los maneja de otra manera, pero nosotros seguimos enfocado en lo nuestro,” Díaz said post-match.
For the 11th round, Tobar assigned others: Cristián Garay for Palestino vs. Deportes Concepción, Miguel Araos for La Calera vs. Coquimbo, Piero Maza for Audax vs. Limache, and more. Diego Flores will referee the Clásico Universitario.
