Sweden's national ice hockey team coach Sam Hallam addressed the evaluation of Tre Kronor's performance at the Milano Olympics, where they exited early in the quarterfinals against the USA. He expressed deep disappointment but noted he is not heavily involved in the review process.
Sam Hallam, förbundskapten for Tre Kronor, spoke briefly with media at Hovet arena during the SHL playoff eighth-final between Djurgården and Malmö. Accompanied by landslagschef Anders Lundberg, Hallam was there amid preparations for upcoming national team events and the spring VM (World Championship). Hockeynews reported in March that the federation's evaluation revealed internal divisions within Tre Kronor, including open conflicts between coaching staff and players, as well as criticism of preparations and communication ahead of and during the Olympics. Questions have arisen about Hallam's role in the VM, linked to this review. Hallam stated: “Vi är otroligt besvikna” (We are incredibly disappointed) over the results, noting the team reached the quarterfinals and pushed Olympic gold medalists to overtime, feeling they could have won. On the evaluation, he said: “Det pågår en utvärdering nu... jag är inte jättedrivande i den” (An evaluation is ongoing... I am not hugely driving it), emphasizing others are leading it for honest feedback. He maintains continuous contact with players, asking about their experiences, but clarified he is focused on coaching rather than spearheading the review. Hallam also touched on young talents like Anton Frondell, who is progressing, and Djurgården's prospects, stressing a bridge between junior and senior teams, citing examples like Unger-Söröm and Leo Carlsson. Regarding NHL players' interest in VM during an Olympics year, he noted varied enthusiasm among about 70 candidates due to a compressed schedule and fatigue, but observed increasing willingness to join Tre Kronor over the past three years.
