Schaefer chases rookie record as Islanders face Stars

New York Islanders rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer has a chance to tie an NHL record when his team visits the Dallas Stars on Tuesday. The 18-year-old leads first-year players with 15 points in 19 games. Stars forward Jason Robertson aims for back-to-back hat tricks.

The New York Islanders (10-7-2) visit the Dallas Stars (12-4-3) at American Airlines Center on November 18, 2025, at 8 p.m. ET, broadcast on Victory+ and MSGSN2. This matchup highlights promising young talent on both sides.

Matthew Schaefer, the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, leads rookies with 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) in 19 games. He can tie Phil Housley's record of 16 points (two goals, 14 assists from Oct. 6 to Nov. 26, 1982) for most by an 18-year-old defenseman through his first 20 games. Just last week, Schaefer became the youngest player in League history to score an overtime goal at 18 years, 70 days old, in a 3-2 win at the Utah Mammoth on Nov. 14, surpassing Sidney Crosby's mark of 18 years, 101 days set on Nov. 16, 2005.

For the Stars, forward Jason Robertson seeks back-to-back hat tricks for the second time in his career, after March 4-6, 2022. He scored three goals in a 5-1 win against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday. Robertson would become the first player in Dallas/Minnesota North Stars history to achieve consecutive hat tricks.

The game is part of an eight-game NHL slate on Tuesday, including nationally televised coverage in the United States.
