Small animals get emergency veterinary care around the clock in Uppsala

The University Animal Hospital in Ultuna, Uppsala, now provides emergency care for small animals like dogs and cats around the clock every day of the week. The department had been closed on weekends since spring 2023, drawing criticism from pet owners who had to seek help in other regions. The change was implemented at the end of March this year.

Since spring 2023, the emergency reception for small animals at the University Animal Hospital (UDS) in Ultuna has been closed on weekends. This forced pet owners to seek veterinary help in other regions, prompting strong criticism.

Since the end of March, the small animal department has been open for emergency visits around the clock. Maria Karlsson, department head for small animals, says: "We notice that people are happy we are open and that they don't have to travel so far."

One reason for the extension is the increase in veterinary students from 100 to 150. "Then we need more cases so they can get more clinical training," Karlsson explains.

For emergency visits, callers should phone ahead. The department may temporarily limit intake to ensure patient safety and a good work environment. Scheduled appointments are weekdays 8–16. Christina Svensson shares in a video what the change means for her and her dog Ziggey.
