SMHI warns of flooding risk from Gävle to Sundsvall

SMHI has issued a yellow warning for heavy rainfall from Gävle to Sundsvall on Thursday evening, raising the risk of flooding on roads and viaducts. Trafikverket has increased its preparedness to manage potential disruptions. Authorities urge drivers to proceed with caution.

A rainstorm is moving in from the southwest across the Norrland coast on Thursday. Heavier rainfall is expected, and SMHI has issued a yellow warning for the northern coastal area of Gävleborg until 02:00 at night. The warning states that roads and viaducts may flood, and large volumes of water could damage infrastructure.

Trafikverket is on high alert for the impending rain chaos. “We have raised the preparedness for the area,” says Peter Johnsson, press spokesperson for Trafikverket. He warns that roads could flood and that water masses might damage both railways and roads: “Roads flood over. And large water masses can also cause damage to railways and roads.”

Although traffic may be affected, Trafikverket does not expect the situation to be as severe as in Västernorrland earlier this fall. “We don't think it will be like then. But we have preparedness and are ready,” adds Johnsson.

SMHI advises drivers to proceed carefully, maintain distance, and avoid driving through water pools to minimize risks.
