Vachier-Lagrave wins Titled Tuesday on tiebreaks

Maxime Vachier-Lagrave claimed victory in the July 21 Titled Tuesday chess tournament after finishing with 9.5 points, the same total as runner-up Fabiano Caruana.

Vachier-Lagrave secured his 13th career Titled Tuesday title with a key win over Caruana in round seven. The game shifted when Caruana lost a pawn to a pin, allowing Vachier-Lagrave to convert a rook ending for the full point.

Both players reached 9.5/11, but Vachier-Lagrave held the tiebreak edge. Alexander Grischuk took third place on the same score after strong play earlier in the event.

The tournament featured several titled grandmasters who started with perfect scores. Vachier-Lagrave drew his final two games to clinch first place ahead of Caruana's late charge.
