Abiodun promotes culture for Nigeria's economic diversification

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has emphasized the role of culture and festivals in boosting Nigeria's economy as a source of foreign exchange. Speaking at the 39th Akesan Day Celebration in Iperu-Remo, he highlighted how such events can drive tourism and job creation. He drew examples from countries like Dubai and Brazil to illustrate the potential benefits.

At the 39th Akesan Day Celebration held on November 29, 2025, at Christ Apostolic Church Grammar School in Iperu-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun addressed the gathered community. He argued that properly harnessed culture could serve as a major driver of foreign exchange for Nigeria, similar to how many nations have diversified their economies through tourism.

Abiodun pointed out that festivals attract thousands of visitors, benefiting local businesses, artisans, entertainers, food vendors, hotels, and transport operators. 'Festivals like this bring thousands of visitors who patronise local businesses, artisans, entertainers, food vendors, hotels and of course, our transport operators,' he stated. He cited examples such as Lisabi Day, Oronna Day, and Ojude Oba, noting that these events create jobs and draw investments when promoted effectively.

The governor referenced global successes, including Brazil, Kenya, and Dubai, where tourism significantly contributes to GDP. 'Communities across the world, from Brazil to Kenya, have used culture as a driver of economic expansion,' Abiodun said. He stressed that Nigeria could achieve similar results by developing its cultural identities, turning festivals into catalysts for visibility and growth.

Beyond economics, Abiodun highlighted culture's role in fostering shared identity, social harmony, and values like unity, honesty, and communal responsibility. His administration remains committed to promoting culture, preserving history, and supporting community development in Ogun State. He also praised President Bola Tinubu's economic reforms and pledged alignment with federal efforts.

Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Sesan Fagbemi, described Akesan Day as a key platform for cultural promotion and community planning, assuring continued state support for heritage preservation. The Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, commended the Iperu people for upholding traditions. Chairman of the occasion, Chief Solomon Onafowokan, praised the state's infrastructure, including the Gateway International Airport in Iperu, and urged heritage preservation.

Chief Taiwo Oyebanji, Chairman of the Iperu Akesan Community Development Association, reported progress in roads, physical development, and erosion control over the past year. He called for unity, resolution of boundary disputes, better security, improved power supply, and completion of ongoing projects.
