«Anstalt» team criticizes ZDF decision on Danger Dan

The moderators of the satire show «Die Anstalt» clearly criticized ZDF’s disinvitation of rapper Danger Dan during their 100th anniversary episode.

In the episode, which ZDF offered in advance on its stream on Saturday evening, moderators Claus von Wagner, Max Uthoff and Maike Kühl spoke at length about the dispute. They read passages from the song «Keine Angst» and discussed the final lines that name first names identical to those of known left-wing extremists.

Claus von Wagner said the broadcaster’s decision was timid at a time of rising right-wing violence. The team condemned violence but stressed the importance of debate.

Danger Dan was originally set to perform with pianist Igor Levit. An empty piano and lone microphone served as a reminder. ZDF justified the cancellation by saying the lyrics could promote self-justice. Oliver Heidemann from ZDF regretted how long the decision took.
