March and March organised nationwide demonstrations on 30 June calling for undocumented migrants to leave South Africa. While most protests remained peaceful, isolated incidents of looting and violence occurred in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
Police arrested more than 900 people across the country during the demonstrations. Acting National Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane said the majority were undocumented foreigners or individuals involved in looting.
In KwaDabeka near Durban, looters targeted foreign-owned shops including SaveMore and Superseven on 30 June. Security guard Sanele Ncane reported that groups demanded foreign owners leave the area.
In Alexandra, Johannesburg, 21-year-old Siphesihle Mncemeleni was shot dead during unrest on Tuesday evening. Gauteng police said the circumstances remain under investigation.
Hundreds of Malawian nationals sought shelter in Robertson, Western Cape, after facing eviction threats linked to the protests. Many await repatriation to Malawi.
