An apartment building with eight units burned down in Sundsvall on Sunday. Several people were evacuated, and one was taken to hospital with minor injuries. A nearby school will remain closed on Monday.
Rescue services were called after lunchtime on Sunday to a fire in Hemmanet, Sundsvall municipality. A witness described the building as fully engulfed with high, open flames, according to DN.
Shortly after 3 pm, the rescue services decided to let the apartment building burn down to protect surrounding structures instead. “It was not reasonable to extinguish the property,” said Johanna Pålsson of the rescue services.
Several residents were evacuated from the building. One person was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
According to TT, a nearby school will be closed on Monday, a decision made by the principal in consultation with the rescue services. The rescue services will monitor the site overnight.
A VMA warning was issued during the fire, urging the public to stay indoors. The warning was lifted in the evening.
