Apple removed fans from the MacBook Air starting with the M1 model in late 2020. The change relies on power-efficient Apple Silicon and passive cooling through the aluminum case.
Apple made the decision to drop fans when it switched from Intel processors to its own M-series chips. The last model with a fan was the early 2020 Intel version. All subsequent MacBook Air models, including the current M5 version, run without active cooling.
The passive heat spreader transfers heat through the case, allowing silent operation during typical tasks. This design also reduces weight slightly and improves battery life compared with the prior fan-equipped model.
Under heavy loads such as video exports or gaming, the system may experience thermal throttling that reduces performance. The MacBook Air can also feel warmer on the underside during sustained use.
For users needing higher sustained performance, Apple offers the MacBook Pro with active cooling, a brighter display, and additional ports. The base 14-inch MacBook Pro M5 starts at $1,999 while the 13-inch M5 Air begins at $1,299.
