Bahia confirms methanol poisoning in seven people

Seven people were hospitalized in Bahia's interior after consuming distilled beverages contaminated with methanol at an engagement party. Forensic analysis confirmed the toxic substance in blood samples and drinks. Three victims are in serious condition, and the selling establishment was shut down.

In the municipality of Ribeira do Pombal, about 280 kilometers from Salvador, seven people—two men and five women—showed severe symptoms after consuming alcoholic beverages at an engagement party. Symptoms included vomiting, nausea, dizziness, fainting sensations, shortness of breath, and blurred vision. All victims were admitted to Hospital Geral Santa Tereza locally, but two were transferred to Instituto Couto Maia in Salvador.

The Bahia Health Secretariat (Sesab) confirmed the methanol poisoning through forensic analysis by the Technical Police Department. The tests detected the substance in the consumed drinks and in the victims' blood samples. Three patients are in serious condition, and the specific antidote for methanol was sent to the hospital for use as indicated.

Local health surveillance shut down the establishment that sold the beverages. The Territorial Police Station in Ribeira do Pombal opened an inquiry, seized bottles, and took statements at the hospital.

In a statement, Sesab advised: “Sesab urges the entire Bahian population to reinforce, especially during this festive period, the recommended measures when purchasing and consuming distilled beverages, ensuring their origin, intact packaging and security seals, and the reliability of the selling establishments.”

Methanol, a toxic substance used in products like antifreeze, can cause blindness, coma, and death. In Brazil, as of December 5, there were 73 confirmed cases and 22 deaths from methanol poisoning across several states.
