Bitcoin BIP-110 proposal nears deadline with zero miner support

A proposal to limit non-financial data on the Bitcoin blockchain is approaching its early August deadline with minimal backing from miners and nodes.

BIP-110, known as the Reduced Data Temporary Soft Fork, would tighten limits on OP_RETURN and other data-carrying methods for one year. Backers argue it refocuses Bitcoin on payments and reduces node burden, while critics say it improperly censors valid transactions.

Michael Saylor posted that there are 110 things more dangerous to Bitcoin than spam and that the proposal turns a spam dispute into a consensus change invalidating fee-paying transactions. Adam Back stated that Bitcoin respectfully says no to what the proponents want and suggested they fork away if unconvinced.

Miner signaling stands at zero percent with no major pools supporting it. Node adoption remains in the low single digits, mostly via Bitcoin Knots. The signaling period runs from block 957,600 to 959,615, with a voluntary lock-in deadline at block 961,542 expected in early August.
