BMW EVs gain access to Tesla Superchargers starting December 10

BMW electric vehicles in the United States can now charge at Tesla Superchargers, expanding access to over 25,000 stations through adapters or built-in Magic Docks. This update, effective December 10, 2025, integrates the network into the BMW Charging system via the My BMW app and Shell Recharge. Owners benefit from Plug & Charge functionality and automatic billing without needing the Tesla app.

BMW's announcement marks a significant step in electric vehicle charging compatibility, following years of industry shifts toward the North American Charging Standard (NACS). Initially revealed in 2023, the access was delayed but is now rolling out, adding more than 2,000 Tesla stations and 25,000 Superchargers to the BMW Charging Network. This brings the total public charging points available to BMW drivers across North America to 180,000, including partners like Electrify America, ChargePoint, and EVgo, all accessible through the Shell Recharge account in the My BMW app.

Current-generation BMW EVs, such as the i4, i5, i7, and iX, can charge at standard NACS Superchargers using a CCS-to-NACS DC adapter. BMW recommends the Lectron adapter, priced at $175 and engineered with BMW-grade precision, which owners can order via the app or email and add to charging settings. Official BMW adapters will be available as accessories starting in Q2 2026. For Magic Dock stations, which feature built-in adapters, any BMW EV—including older models like the i3—can charge without extra hardware.

Plug & Charge simplifies the process: drivers plug in, and charging starts automatically, with billing handled through the Shell Recharge account at Tesla's standard non-Tesla rates. To enable this, owners must set up a Shell Recharge account, activate Plug & Charge in the vehicle, and install the latest remote software upgrade, such as 25-11-530 or 11/2025.30. The newest iDrive 8.5 update allows automatic account detection.

BMW USA released a YouTube video demonstrating the process step-by-step, from adding the adapter in the app for route planning to initiating sessions via the app if needed. Looking ahead, new vehicles like the 2026 i5 M60 will feature native NACS ports, with more models—including the iX3—following throughout the year. However, the 2026 iX and i5 xDrive40/eDrive40 require a remote software upgrade in Spring 2026 due to hardware differences.
