Boralex's battery storage facility near Tilbury goes operational

A major energy storage project near Tilbury, Ontario, has begun operations as promised. Quebec-based Boralex announced the $180 million facility, which can power 80,000 homes. The site uses Tesla batteries to support the grid during peak demand.

The Sanjgon Battery Energy Storage facility, located at the boundary between Lakeshore and Tilbury municipalities, became fully operational this week, fulfilling commitments made by Boralex in 2024. This 80-megawatt installation, costing $180 million, relies on 89 Tesla Megapack 2XL lithium-ion battery systems to store and release energy. It provides four hours of continuous power to the grid, equivalent to supplying electricity for 80,000 homes.

Directly linked to Hydro One's infrastructure, the facility stores excess energy during off-peak times and discharges it during high-demand periods, boosting reliability. Boralex confirmed that all systems underwent rigorous testing for performance and safety. The project was chosen by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to address rising electricity needs and improve grid resilience.

Robin Deveaux, Boralex's Executive Vice President and General Manager for North America, described it as part of broader initiatives to enhance access to affordable renewable energy. A Community Benefit Agreement with Lakeshore municipality allocates $1,000 per megawatt annually over the project's lifespan to fund local programs.

"Hosting the Sanjgon Battery Energy Storage facility is a source of pride for Lakeshore," said Mayor Tracey Bailey. "Our communities are proud to play a role in advancing Ontario’s clean energy future. Projects like this one strengthen our energy infrastructure and deliver long-term benefits for Lakeshore residents and businesses."

The development involved close partnership with Walpole Island First Nation. Chief Leela Thomas stated, "We are pleased to reach this major milestone for the Sanjgon Battery Energy Storage facility and our community. The Sanjgon Battery Energy Storage facility marks a significant step toward a cleaner, more reliable energy future. Walpole Island First Nation values this partnership with Boralex, working together to advance sustainable solutions that benefit our communities for generations to come."
