Mayor Babalwa Lobishe faces a 48-hour ultimatum to resign or risk provincial administration of Nelson Mandela Bay. Deputy mayor Gary van Niekerk is also targeted by a no-confidence motion over alleged misconduct.
Abantu Integrity Movement councillor Khusta Jack, who left the ANC-led coalition in May, issued the ultimatum on Tuesday. He cited service delivery failures and a public spat between Lobishe and van Niekerk.
Jack said the mayor had failed to lead the metro out of its worst service delivery crisis in years. He threatened to petition Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa to place the metro under administration if she did not resign.
Lobishe accused van Niekerk of failing to perform delegated duties such as international relations. Van Niekerk claimed the mayor had instructed officials not to take instructions from him or answer his calls.
A motion against Lobishe is scheduled for tabling on 6 August. A separate motion against van Niekerk was not presented at Tuesday's council meeting.
