During the closing segment of WWE Monday Night Raw in Indianapolis, World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk made a personal remark about Roman Reigns' deceased father, Sika Anoa'i, escalating their rivalry ahead of WrestleMania 42. The exchange drew strong reactions from the audience and backstage personnel. Reigns responded with criticism of Punk's return to WWE and his championship role.
The confrontation occurred on March 3, 2026, during the final moments of WWE Monday Night Raw, broadcast from Indianapolis. It followed the Elimination Chamber event, where Punk defended his World Heavyweight Championship against Finn Bálor. Roman Reigns, returning to the show, addressed his upcoming challenge to Punk at WrestleMania 42, but Punk interrupted and shifted the tone.
Reigns referred to Punk by his real name, Phil, and stated, "We brought you back here to entertain the 30-40 year-old virgins that live with their mom and dad. We brought you back to sell a few t-shirts here and there. But we didn't bring you back to be champion. That's too much responsibility for you. That's too much power. That's above your pay grade." He accused Punk of complaining backstage and threatened to put him on a retirement tour like John Cena's.
Punk retorted, "You're going to retire me? You're going to retire CM Punk! Well, brother, you just made the list. You went from getting beat at WrestleMania to now I'm going to bury you. And then you won't be alone anymore because I'm going to bury you next to your father." The audience gasped at the reference to Sika Anoa'i, who passed away in June 2024 at age 79. Sika was a WWE Hall of Famer and one-half of the Wild Samoans tag team with his brother Afa, winning the WWF World Tag Team Championship three times. Afa died a few months later at 81.
Following Sika's death, Reigns said, "My father had a profound impact on my entire family and we are forever grateful for the foundation he built for us. There’s no way to fill the void left by his passing but my sisters and I will do our best to represent him and his legacy."
Backstage footage showed Reigns appearing furious as he walked away after the segment. Zilla Fatu, son of the late Umaga and a member of the Anoa'i family, reacted on a livestream, stating he was no longer a fan of Punk and threatening to slap him. WWE executive Triple H addressed the situation internally, reminding talent about boundaries when referencing family legacies in promos, emphasizing responsibility while maintaining storyline intensity.
The two will face off for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas on April 18 and 19.
