David Lynch's family has announced plans to publish the scripts for his unrealized Netflix series 'Unrecorded Night'. The late director's daughter, Jennifer Lynch, shared the news on Reddit, emphasizing the desire to honor his work posthumously. The project, which stalled during the Covid-19 pandemic, had advanced to location scouting before production halted.
David Lynch, the visionary filmmaker behind classics like Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet, and the TV series Twin Peaks, passed away on January 16, 2025, following a diagnosis of emphysema that required supplemental oxygen. Just over a year later, on February 3, 2026, his daughter Jennifer Lynch responded to a fan inquiry on Reddit about the script for Unrecorded Night, an ambitious project pitched to Netflix.
The series had received approval, with rumors suggesting potential roles for Laura Dern and Naomi Watts, both frequent collaborators with Lynch. Production progressed to location scouting, but it came to a standstill amid the Covid-19 pandemic and never resumed. Longtime producer Sabrina Sutherland described the script as "the best thing he ever did," while cinematographer Peter Deming, who read it, called it an original mystery unlike Twin Peaks. Deming noted its thickness, requiring three sittings to read, and its structure as a "continuing story" spanning multiple episodes, similar to Twin Peaks: The Return.
Jennifer Lynch explained the family's decision: "Unrecorded Night scripts are likely to be published by myself and my siblings as a way to offer what could not be realised, to those who would have loved it." She urged fans to await the official release, warning against unauthorized versions that might "soil the beautiful work Dad created." She added, "Like many millions of people, we are great fans of our father’s work, and wish to see it shared and celebrated in every good way. We know there is a wanting, and we feel the need to fulfil Dad’s gifts as best as possible."
Discussions about releasing the script as a book began as Lynch's health declined, according to Deming. The announcement coincides with reflections on the first anniversary of his death, including tributes from actors Kyle MacLachlan and Naomi Watts, who credited Lynch with transforming their lives and careers. Musicians like Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Sky Ferreira also expressed their admiration, highlighting his enduring influence across film and music.
