David Mitchell has shared insights into the second season of the BBC comedy-drama Ludwig during an event. He discussed his character's ongoing challenges and praised the new cast members joining the series. The renewal follows the success of the 2024 breakout hit.
The BBC's Ludwig, a comedy-drama detective series starring David Mitchell as John Ludwig, became one of 2024's standout shows. After its renewal, season 2 picks up from the first season's conclusion, where John's secret impersonation of his missing police officer brother James is revealed to the team but overlooked. Now an official crime consultant, John faces continued complications.
Speaking exclusively at the Radio Times Covers Party 2026, Mitchell explained the nuances of his character's position. "When you watch the second series, you realise there's still quite a lot of obfuscation involved in his role, because not everyone in the police force is entirely on side with his appointment," he said. "And of course, he's still got to cover up the fact that for a long time he was solving cases while impersonating a police officer. And if that ever gets out, well, five murderers will walk free, and he won't walk free himself."
The new season introduces fresh faces to the police team: Ben Ashenden and Rumi Sutton, whom Mitchell described as "brilliant, very funny" with a "great dynamic with each other." Additionally, Mark Bonnar joins as newspaper editor Gareth Fisher, a role Mitchell called "hilarious, hapless" and "terrific." Sian Clifford portrays local MP Joanne Kemper, with Mitchell noting her role is "intriguing" and praising their collaboration: "it was brilliant to work with her, because I've admired her stuff for years."
According to the season 2 synopsis, John is now openly more Ludwig-like—excelling at puzzles but struggling elsewhere. His brother James remains missing, and as an official employee, John is barred from using police resources to investigate. Undeterred, John and his sister-in-law Lucy (played by Anna Maxwell Martin) persist in their search, embarking on a new deception. Season 1 is available on BBC iPlayer.
