Borussia Dortmund defeated FSV Mainz 05 4-0 in the opening match of the 22nd Bundesliga matchday. The goals were scored by Serhou Guirassy twice, Maximilian Beier, and Ramy Bensebaini, all assisted by Julian Ryerson. This result brings Dortmund within three points of league leaders FC Bayern.
Borussia Dortmund began the 22nd matchday of the Bundesliga with a convincing 4-0 victory over FSV Mainz 05 on Friday evening at Signal Iduna Park in front of 81,365 spectators. Coach Niko Kovač's team led 3-0 at halftime and remains unbeaten at home this season.
Serhou Guirassy scored the opener in the 10th minute with a header from a Julian Ryerson free kick. Five minutes later, Maximilian Beier made it 2-0 with another header from a Ryerson cross. Mainz had a chance through Silas in the 21st minute but failed to convert, and Silvan Widmer's goal in the 38th was disallowed for offside. Just before halftime, Guirassy headed in the 3-0 from a Ryerson corner.
After the break, Mainz goalkeeper Daniel Batz made strong saves against Felix Nmecha (52nd), Beier (55th), and Julian Brandt (57th). Dortmund controlled the game and added the 4-0 in the 84th minute through Ramy Bensebaini from another Ryerson corner. One source reports it as an own goal by Dominik Kohr in that minute.
Ryerson was named man of the match and now has 11 assists this season, making him the third-best provider in the league. Guirassy increased his tally to 11 goals. "It was nice to decide the game early; it gives us a good feeling," Ryerson said. Mainz keeper Batz was frustrated: "The set pieces killed us."
The win marks Dortmund's sixth straight league victory, with the team unbeaten in 15 matches. Mainz suffered a setback after three wins but remains above the relegation zone for now. Bayern can restore their lead on Saturday at Werder Bremen.
