Ethiopia adopts budgets with dedicated tobacco control funding

Ethiopia and Addis Ababa have adopted budgets with dedicated funding for tobacco control for the first time.

The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids applauded the Ethiopian government for these actions. The federal budget includes over 23 million Ethiopian birr for the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority.

Addis Ababa has dedicated around 120 million birr to its health regulatory authority and 11 sub-cities. Ethiopia has one of the strongest tobacco control laws in Africa.

The organization stressed that the funds must be disbursed and used effectively.
