Ethiopia's Prime Minister Office issued a statement on the seventh general election held on Ginbot 24, 2018 EC. Over 54 million citizens registered and participated. International observers described the vote as democratic.
More than 50,188 of 52,000 polling stations opened on time. Over 10,438 candidates from 42 political parties and 80 independents competed. The African Union observer team led by former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta assessed the election as conducted “within a legal and institutional framework that broadly supports democratic governance.” IGAD observers confirmed that ballot boxes were properly sealed. The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission confirmed no human rights violations during voting. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed gratitude to participants.
