The inaugural British Bridleless Competition took place at Merrist Wood on 31 May, featuring showjumping and dressage events without bridles. More than 20 competitors participated, with around 500 spectators in attendance. Organisers described the event as a success that has sparked widespread interest.
The competition included dressage tests from intro to elementary levels, one Grand Prix freestyle, and showjumping up to 1.20m. Competitors submitted videos to demonstrate competence and safety before participating. All horses warmed up with bridles, and organisers conducted final safety checks. Organiser Mia Rodley of The Heart of Horsemanship said the event exceeded expectations. “It’s huge,” she said. “People were in tears of happiness watching, which was lovely – and it’s just blown up.” She noted that Horse & Country live-streamed the show, with clips gaining hundreds of thousands of views. British Dressage List One judge Mary-Anne Horn, who officiated the dressage alongside Lyla Cansfield, called the experience inspiring. “The horses were very relaxed and it certainly teaches people to ride,” she said. Competitor Lynne MacLeod, who performed a grand prix freestyle, added that the atmosphere was positive and supportive. Rodley confirmed plans for future events, stating that another British Bridleless Competition is expected later this year.
