Former kayole ocs breaks down in court while testifying

Former Kayole police station commander SSP Dennis Omunga broke down in court while testifying in a murder case against six officers. He recalled losing 13 officers during his short tenure amid high crime. The case concerns the killing of Wycliffe Vincent Owuor, a suspect in a 2019 Sh72 million robbery.

On October 29, 2025, at Milimani High Court, SSP Dennis Omunga, who was Kayole OCS on May 24, 2020, gave emotional testimony in the murder case against six officers: Cpl Joseph Ojode Obambo, Cst Henry Mutai, Cst Bashir Ali, Cst Charles Kirimi, Insp James Ingige, and Cpl Vincent Odhiambo. They are accused of killing Wycliffe Vincent Owuor, who was shot dead on March 24, 2020, at Kayole Junction.

Omunga said he received a report of an armed robbery at a business and dispatched the six officers. "I received a report that there was a robbery being carried out at Kayole Junction by robbers armed with pistols. I ordered six police officers to rush and stop that robbery," Omunga told the court. The officers ordered Owuor and two others to halt and drop their weapons, but they opened fire. Police returned fire, killing Owuor on the spot; the other two fled on a motorcycle while shooting in the air. A homemade pistol and knife were found on Owuor.

Omunga recalled the dangers in Kayole: "13 police officers were killed by robbers during the time I was OCS in Kayole," he said, including a Presidential Guard unit officer. Owuor was out on Sh500,000 bond in the 2019 Sh72 million Standard Chartered Bank robbery case. The police report claims Owuor was killed in a shootout, but his family and a witness say he was executed after being handcuffed.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) investigated and recommended murder charges, with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) concurring. The trial continues, with the next hearing on February 26, 2026, to determine if the killing was lawful or extrajudicial.
