George Strait unpacks his Texas real estate portfolio

Country music legend George Strait remains a devoted Texas resident, with a history of custom homes reflecting his love for the state. The 73-year-old Grammy winner recently shared insights into his properties, from a sold San Antonio mansion to a ranch near Laredo. Strait emphasizes privacy while highlighting his ranching roots and outdoor pursuits.

George Strait, the 73-year-old Grammy-winning country singer, has long called Texas home, a preference rooted in his lifelong connection to the state. Married to his high school sweetheart Norma since 1971, Strait keeps his personal life private, as he noted in 2017: “I’ve never been one to like to talk about myself a lot.” He has expressed deep affection for Texas, stating, “I love the fact that I’m from the great state. Texas is in my blood from the toes to the nose.”

One of his most detailed residences was a custom adobe mansion built in the mid-1990s on a 12-acre estate within The Dominion Country Club in San Antonio. Designed by architect Bill Tull in a blend of Moorish and Pueblo styles, the 8,000-square-foot home featured three bedrooms, six bathrooms, and a detached guest casita. Highlights included thick exposed ceiling beams, hand-sculpted fireplaces, plastered walls, custom stained glass windows, saguaro cactus shutters, and a stainless steel refrigerator with decorative embossing. The primary suite had dual bathrooms, walk-in closets, and fireplaces, while amenities encompassed a gym, sauna, wine cellar, basketball court, outdoor kitchen, and a mosaic-tiled infinity pool and spa.

In 2013, Strait told San Antonio Magazine, “I can’t imagine living anywhere else. I’m anchored, so to speak. San Antonio is a big city with a small town feel—that’s what I really like about it. Not to mention it’s also right on the edge of the South Texas brush country and the beautiful Texas Hill Country.” The property was listed for sale in late 2017 at $10 million, though the price was not publicly advertised initially. Strait's daughter-in-law and listing agent, Tamara Strait, explained, “He doesn’t want to flaunt what he has. He doesn’t like to be in the limelight, that’s why we weren’t advertising it as his house.” After four years and price reductions, it sold in December 2021 for an undisclosed amount, last listed at $6.9 million. The move was driven by a desire for more space farther from the city, with Tamara noting in 2019, “He just wanted to move further out of the city. If he could pick that house up and move it, he would. It’s still his dream home.”

Strait also owned a residence in Rockport, Texas, as of 2017, which was damaged by Hurricane Harvey. He advocated for relief efforts, prompting Governor Greg Abbott to say, “He cares so much about Rockport. We were talking and he said, ‘Governor, we need to shine a spotlight on Rockport, on Aransas County, to let people around the world know how important this is.’” It is unclear if he still owns the property.

Additionally, Strait confirmed a ranch near Laredo in a 2013 interview, where he enjoys hunting, roping, riding, and operating a dozer. “I just love being out on the ranch—hunting, roping, or just riding around checking things out,” he said. “I also have gotten to where I like to drive a dozer. It’s instant gratification. Once I start a project on my dozer, it’s hard to quit.” Raised on a ranch, Strait credits his father for instilling hard work: “My dad believed in hard work. He did it all his life and he made my brother and I do it when we were young. We didn’t really want to at the time, but at the end of a long day, you did have the feeling of accomplishing something, and it’s a great feeling. I think that working hard does build character.”

In his free time, Strait favors outdoor activities, including golf, fishing, hunting, and riding his horse Joker. In 2022, he shared, “I love to be outside. I play a lot of golf now so, if the weather is good, I’m usually doing that. I still fish and hunt. I went out and rode my favorite rope horse, Joker, on my birthday. He’s still in pretty good shape for his age.” While his current primary residence remains private, Strait's portfolio underscores his enduring ties to Texas.
