Gorch Fock wins Five Sisters Trophy regatta from New York to Boston

The crew of the sailing training ship Gorch Fock has won the Five Sisters Trophy regatta. The vessel finished first after about 7.5 hours.

The roughly 60-nautical-mile course from New York to Boston led through waters around Cape Cod. The Gorch Fock finished ahead of the Eagle from the USA by 38 minutes, the Sagres from Portugal by one hour and the Mircea from Romania by two hours.

It was the second race among the sister ships. They had last competed 50 years ago for the US bicentennial. This time they joined events for the 250th anniversary.

Commander Elmar Bornkessel said: “After five decades the Gorch Fock has brought the Five Sisters Trophy back to Germany. This success belongs to my crew.” The ship is expected back in Germany in September.
