Sandra Rosa Camacho Flores, a union leader and former mayoral candidate for the Partido del Trabajo (PT) in Temoac, Morelos, died after a shooting on March 26 at 2:30 p.m. in Privada Terán, San José neighborhood.
Armed assailants intercepted the activist and fired directly before fleeing. Paramedics confirmed her death at the scene despite a swift emergency response. Police and Mexican Army personnel cordoned off the area, as forensics experts from the State General Prosecutor's Office (FGE) gathered ballistic evidence.
This marks the second killing of a political figure in Temoac this year. Earlier, Oviel ‘N’, a former PRI mayoral candidate, was found dead late January in Tetelilla, Jonacatepec.
Camacho had publicly denounced extortion rackets targeting merchants and public figures in Temoac. Last August, she urged Governor Margarita González to bolster security in the municipality amid rising violence.
Eastern Morelos is embroiled in territorial disputes by criminal groups. Current mayor Valentín Lavín Romero survived an armed attack on January 31 and requested leave to recover. Recently, former municipal officials have been arrested for alleged ties to illicit activities, pointing to organized crime infiltration in local government.
The Security Secretariat reported the initial gunshots, underscoring ongoing insecurity in the region.
