In Madison, Wisconsin, the Iowa men's basketball team (19-7, 9-7 Big Ten) faced a tough challenge against the No. 24 Wisconsin Badgers (19-8, 11-5 Big Ten). The Hawkeyes started strong, posting one of their more efficient offensive halves and leading by one point at halftime. However, the second half saw Wisconsin pull ahead with two decisive 10-0 scoring runs, ultimately securing an 84-71 victory.
Iowa head coach Ben McCollum highlighted defensive shortcomings after the game. "I didn’t think we did a good job defensively," he said. "I thought we were really poor at executing the scout. But part of that had to do with Wisconsin and what they do offensively. I was disappointed in our transition defense; disappointed in our ball screen coverage."
The Hawkeyes have now dropped two of their last three games against ranked opponents over an eight-day span, bringing their record to 1-6 against such teams this season. Their only ranked win came against No. 9 Nebraska last week, where defense played a key role. Bennett Stirtz led Iowa with 23 points, marking the ninth time in the last 10 games he has scored at least 20. Tate Sage added 11 points in his first double-digit outing since January 20, while Alvaro Folgueiras and Tavion Banks each scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Despite four Iowa players reaching double figures, the team managed only 30 points in the second half compared to Wisconsin's 44. Stirtz reflected on the frustration: "It’s very frustrating. Because if you play super well on offense and you play poor defense, this is the result you’re going to get. It’s a reminder that we have to play well more than just on offense, especially on the road."
Wisconsin's Nick Boyd dominated with 27 points and 10 assists for a double-double. Nolan Winter contributed 18 points, John Blackwell added 13—all in the second half—and Austin Rapp scored 14. The Badgers' offense hit exactly their average points per game, a rare occurrence for Iowa's defense this season.
Tate Sage emphasized team defense: "I feel like it all comes back to our shell, what we call our defense. Playing defense together. Obviously, we’ve got to guard the ball, but also relying on our second and third defender to stop the ball as a unit."
With four regular-season games left, Iowa holds the final spot for a double-bye in the Big Ten Tournament. The Hawkeyes return home to face Ohio State on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
