Joel Embiid out with right knee soreness for 76ers-Celtics game

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid has been ruled out for Tuesday's game against the Boston Celtics due to right knee soreness. The team announced he will undergo further evaluation by doctors after imaging. Embiid, who has a history of knee issues, has played in six of the Sixers' 10 games this season.

The Philadelphia 76ers added Joel Embiid to their injury report on Tuesday with right knee soreness, sidelining the star center for the evening matchup against the Boston Celtics. Coach Nick Nurse reported that Embiid felt the soreness during the team's shootaround that morning. "He had some imaging on that this afternoon and doctors are here tonight to go over that with him," Nurse told reporters.

Embiid's injury history adds context to the concern. He missed most of the last two seasons due to left knee problems, including a meniscus tear midway through 2023-24 that limited him to 19 games, followed by arthroscopic surgery last season. He also suffered a right knee sprain in the 2023 playoffs against the Brooklyn Nets. This season, the former Kia MVP has appeared in six of the Sixers' 10 games, averaging 19.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists while being restricted to 20-25 minutes per game. The team has managed his load by sitting him for back-to-backs, including the recent game against Detroit.

When asked about potential multi-game absence, Nurse said, "No expectations at all. We are going to see what they say about the imaging."

Despite Embiid's absence, the 76ers hold a 6-4 record, buoyed by strong play from Tyrese Maxey and rookie VJ Edgecombe in the backcourt. The game tips off at 8 p.m. ET on Peacock and NBC.
