Following the Sunday collapse of an illegal double-storey structure in Doornkop, Soweto—which claimed the lives of Hloniphile Xaba, her daughter Nqobile, and granddaughter Langelihle—Loyiso Masuku, MMC for Finance, stressed the critical need for public awareness of building regulations to enhance safety and ease infrastructure pressures in informal settlements.
Masuku and Executive Mayor Dada Morero promptly secured the area and oversaw the demolition of the unstable remains to protect neighboring residents. On December 29, 2025, Morero personally visited the grieving Xaba family, conveying the city's condolences and engaging with their concerns, as shared on his social media.
