A junior hockey coach has been arrested in Rewari district, Haryana, for allegedly raping a minor girl who became pregnant and suffered a miscarriage this week. The victim reported that the coach, whom she had known for three years, assaulted her four months ago in a stadium bathroom. Police have registered a case under the POCSO Act.
A class 12 student from a village in Rewari district, Haryana, filed a rape complaint at Khol police station on January 9, 2026. The victim, who plays hockey, stated that she had known the accused junior coach for three years. She alleged that four months earlier, he raped her in a bathroom at the stadium where she trained, leading to her pregnancy.
On January 5, her health deteriorated, and her family admitted her to a hospital where a miscarriage was confirmed. The incident came to light following this medical event. Rewari police registered an FIR under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other relevant legal provisions on Friday.
On Saturday, the Rewari police spokesperson said, "We have arrested the accused junior coach. After producing him in a city court, we have taken him on two days of police remand and are questioning him."
This case emerged shortly after a 17-year-old shooter from Faridabad accused a prominent member of India's shooting coaching staff of sexual assault during the National Championships. While the primary incident is in Rewari, it highlights concerns over safety for female athletes in sports.
