Kickapoo Panthers begin boys basketball season with perfect record

The Kickapoo Panthers boys basketball team has launched the 2024-2025 season undefeated at 6-0, averaging 22-point victories. This strong start has boosted their confidence and elevated them to fourth in Division 5 Bound Wisconsin rankings. Seniors on the team credit their long-standing chemistry for the success.

High school basketball often sees teams evolve dramatically year over year, and the Kickapoo Panthers exemplify this trend with their commanding early-season performance. Undefeated through six games, the Panthers have dominated opponents by an average of 22 points, a mark that has quickly drawn attention in the Ridge and Valley Conference.

This surge has positioned Kickapoo fourth in the Division 5 Bound Wisconsin rankings, a notable jump that underscores their potential to challenge for conference supremacy. The team's eight seniors, many of whom have played together since grade school, form the core of this success. Their deep understanding and mutual trust have translated into seamless on-court execution.

Senior Arlon Walters highlighted the shift in expectations: "It's very motivating, you know? Sophomore year when I joined up, like nobody knew Kickapoo; we were down in the conference. Now, this senior year, everybody's expecting Kickapoo to go off. So hearing that motivates us to play better, practice better to become a better team."

Fellow senior Malachi McCauley echoed this sentiment: "I think it's really motivating for me and the team to know that our name is out there, and that teams know we're on the map now."

Aidric Egge, another senior, emphasized the group's cohesion: "We understand what one another is capable of. And we have a lot of strong belief in one another. So I think that can take us very far into the season and lead us to success."

Head coach Matthew Wood praised his players' commitment: "It's been an honor to coach them. I mean, they love to be here. They show up, they get ready. Without me even having to be in the gym, they're very vocal about what we need to work on. They all share the same team goals, and that's getting better every day. Then, you know, the winning will take care of itself if we take care of what we need to do."

Challenges loom, however, in a conference featuring powerhouses like North Crawford, ranked second in Division 5. The Panthers resume play after the Christmas break against Wisconsin Heights on December 30, testing their mettle against stiff competition.
