Barcelona and Spain winger Lamine Yamal has stated he will not change his approach to life despite criticism. The 18-year-old insists he has earned the right to enjoy his success.
Yamal, who signed a long-term contract with Barcelona making him one of the highest-paid players, addressed his off-field activities in an interview with El País. He said he grew up with little and now chooses to enjoy what he has achieved through football.
“I have the power to do whatever I want with my life,” Yamal said. He added that he plans to do things he could not as a child without fear of excess.
The player also noted downsides of fame, including interruptions during meals with family. He said he values quiet moments that others take for granted and takes advantage of anonymity when possible, such as during time in the United States.
Yamal expressed admiration for Lionel Messi and described self-confidence as essential in his profession. He is expected to start for Spain against Saudi Arabia at the World Cup.
