Louisiana voters headed to the polls on Saturday for the Republican primary in the U.S. Senate race. Incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy faced challenges from Rep. Julia Letlow and state Treasurer John Fleming amid heavy involvement from President Donald Trump.
The primary marked a key test for Trump’s efforts to oust Republicans who crossed him in the past. Cassidy, one of seven GOP senators who voted to convict Trump after the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, cast himself as focused on the future rather than past grievances. “I’m going to win today,” Cassidy said in an interview. “I may go into a runoff. But I’m always going to vote for the good of my country and my people.”
