Man attempts to snatch elderly woman's chain in Greater Noida lift

A helmeted man tried to snatch a 70-year-old woman's gold chain inside a lift in a Greater Noida West residential society. The assailant fled after the woman raised an alarm. Police are reviewing CCTV footage and expect to arrest him soon.

The incident occurred around 5 pm on January 8 in Tower No. 15's B1 tower at La Residentia society in Greater Noida West. Victim Bharti Jani, 70, was entering the lift with her granddaughter when the accused followed and attempted to grab her gold chain. The family said the woman initially mistook him for a delivery agent due to his helmet.

Her son, Narendra Jani, recounted: "My mother had gone for a walk with my daughter. While entering the lift, a person wearing a helmet entered after her. She thought he was a delivery agent, but instead he tried to snatch her chain. When she shouted for help, he panicked and ran away."

Daughter-in-law Gunjan described the aftermath: the elderly woman returned to the flat shivering in fear.

CCTV footage captures the helmeted man entering the lift and fleeing shortly after. Family members noted he pushed the woman before escaping. The event has spotlighted security lapses in the society, with residents questioning how the intruder entered unchecked, as no guard was present.

This marks the second theft-related incident in the society within a week, following a motorcycle theft a few days earlier. A video of residents accusing security and maintenance staff of negligence has gone viral on social media. They claim the maintenance head has been absent since the event.

Falling under Bisrakh police station jurisdiction, the case prompted a complaint. Assistant Commissioner of Police Diksha Singh, Central Noida, stated: "After reviewing the CCTV footage, we have got a clue regarding the identity of the accused. He will be arrested soon."
