Wrexham defeated Manchester United 1-0 in a pre-season friendly at Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium on July 18. Sam Smith scored the only goal six minutes before half-time. United fielded a strong first-half side but could not find an equaliser.
Sam Smith slotted home unmarked after a throw-in caught United’s defence out. The Championship side took the lead in the 39th minute at the Olympic Stadium.
Michael Carrick selected several first-team players for the opening 45 minutes, including Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Andrey Santos and captain Harry Maguire. Carrick made 11 changes at half-time.
Wes Brown noted that Santos looked fit and ready after his summer move from Chelsea. Brown added that Yoro appeared sharp at right-back despite usually playing centre-back.
United dominated possession after the restart but failed to create clear chances. Radek Vitek saved with his leg to prevent Wrexham extending the lead.
