Mexico's Security Cabinet confirmed that one marine died and three were wounded in clashes that occurred on Sunday in Mazatlán and El Rosario, Sinaloa.

The incidents began when Navy personnel were monitoring rivers and dams in the San Marcos community of Mazatlán. They were attacked with improvised explosives by suspected members of a criminal group.

In response, federal forces repelled a second attack in El Rosario. They killed ten suspected attackers and detained three men. Authorities seized firearms, ammunition and tactical equipment from them.

Officials expressed condolences to the family of the fallen marine and reaffirmed their commitment to operations against organized crime in the region.
