Kenya's Meteorological Department has warned residents in various regions to prepare for moderate to heavy rains starting Tuesday until next Monday. The rains are expected in the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, and other areas. Residents are advised to be cautious against flood risks.
Kenya's Meteorological Department issued its weekly forecast on Tuesday, October 21, predicting heavy rains in the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, lower South-Eastern areas, and the Rift Valley.
In the Central Highlands, rains are expected in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi counties. The Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley will see rains in Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Nandi. Other counties include Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
In the lower South-Eastern areas, moderate to heavy rains are forecast for Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and inland parts of Tana River. The department has urged residents in these areas to stay alert and take appropriate measures due to the risk of flooding over the next seven days. Heavy rains may occur in some spots, and people are advised to remain vigilant.
This forecast comes as some parts of the country continue to experience extreme heat and drought, particularly in the Rift Valley, Central Highlands, and lower South-Eastern regions. Starting Tuesday, October 21, daytime temperatures along the Coast, North-East, and North-West will rise above 30°C in Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Tana River, Garissa, Isiolo, and Mandera counties. Meanwhile, nighttime temperatures in the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and areas near Mount Kilimanjaro are expected to drop below 10°C.
