The Mexican national team defeated Ecuador 2-0 at Estadio Ciudad de México and qualified for the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, where it will face England on July 5.
Mexico scored through Julián Quiñones in the 22nd minute and Raúl Jiménez in the 31st. The match, delayed one hour by a storm, was played in front of more than 80,000 fans.
Coach Javier Aguirre said the team controlled the game but was not happy with the second half. “I need a whisky,” he said after the win.
Ecuador coach Sebastián Beccacece resigned after the match. Mexico will play its final home game against England on Sunday at 18:00.
