Muna release second single 'So What' from upcoming album 'Dancing on the Wall'

Following last month's album announcement and title track, indie pop trio Muna have shared 'So What', the second preview of their fourth studio album 'Dancing on the Wall', due May 8 via Saddest Factory Records and Secretly Group. The track captures the emptiness of glamorous events and the desire for genuine connection.

LA-based trio Muna released their new single 'So What' on March 17, building on the February announcement of 'Dancing on the Wall', their follow-up to the 2022 self-titled album. The euphoric yet uneasy track, produced by band member Naomi McPherson, features frontwoman Katie Gavin's lyrics: “The party, the premiere / The opening, I get invited / The black dress, the necklace / MM6, it’s all included,” and “And there’s a lot of people here tonight / With their best shoes on drinking for free / There’s a lot of people here tonight / And most of them would want to go home with me.”

The band reflected: “We’re at the point in our career where we’ve been to a lot of fancy parties in beautiful rooms with important people and we know the particular sadness of realising it doesn’t make you feel better. We’ve learned the hard way that validation is hollow and we actually just want connection. This is a song about going to one of those parties and leaving worse off than when we got there.”

Previously previewed by the title track—which the band described as capturing emotional power from a lonely place—the album balances euphoria and tension. Muna, who were dropped by RCA for 'not making enough money' before gaining independence on Phoebe Bridgers’ Saddest Factory, have lined up intimate shows coinciding with the release: May 8 at The Shrine in LA; May 16-18 at Music Hall Of Williamsburg in NYC; and May 26-28 at Heaven in London. Katie Gavin issued her solo debut 'What A Relief' in 2024, while Naomi McPherson debuted in the film 'Saturday Night'.
