Murcia mayor José Ballesta dies aged 67

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, died on Sunday at the age of 67 after suffering from cancer. Deputy mayor Rebeca Pérez has assumed the role on an interim basis until a new mayor is designated.

The Murcia City Council decreed three days of official mourning and the funeral chapel will be open on Monday in the plenary hall. Municipal services will continue normally and the funeral will be held on Tuesday at the Cathedral.

Ballesta, a medical professor and former rector of the University of Murcia, held various regional positions before becoming mayor in 2015. He lost the post in 2021 due to a censure motion and regained it in 2023 with an absolute majority.
