Neon Polygons launches demo for jigsaw puzzle-platformer Piece by Piece

Developer Neon Polygons has released a free demo for its upcoming puzzle-platformer Piece by Piece on Steam. The game features platforming challenges set within rearrangeable jigsaw puzzle pieces. The full version is scheduled for release on March 13.

Piece by Piece stands out in the puzzle-platformer genre by incorporating literal jigsaw puzzle mechanics. Players control characters trapped within individual puzzle pieces and must connect them to navigate obstacles. The demo introduces this core concept right from the start, where a character resembling a little king must juggle pieces to bypass a solid wall, rather than simply linking three in a row.

As gameplay progresses, the demo showcases various character abilities and puzzle variations. The king can run between connected pieces and fall vertically to lower ones. It then shifts to a princess character who aligns flat pieces without traditional tab-and-socket fitting, followed by a teleporting alien that creates portals between connected pieces and a drill guy who burrows through rock lines. The demo culminates in combined challenges using the alien and drill guy abilities, totaling 13 puzzles that provide a solid overview of the mechanics.

The full game, set for March 13, expands on these ideas with additional elements like magic tiles that copy pieces, two-sided flippable pieces, and rotating pieces. These features lead to increasingly complex head-scratchers. While the demo's puzzles may not pose long-term difficulties, they effectively demonstrate the game's innovative twists on the format. Neon Polygons describes Piece by Piece as a collection of tiny platform games, emphasizing its smart and cute design. The demo is available now on Steam, encouraging players to try it and add the game to their wishlist ahead of the full release.
