The Netherlands defeated Sweden 5-1 in a Group F match at the World Cup on Saturday in Houston. Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo each scored twice for the Dutch, with Crysencio Summerville adding a late fifth goal. Anthony Elanga scored a consolation for Sweden.
The result leaves the Netherlands in a strong position to reach the last 32. Manager Ronald Koeman's decision to start Brobbey in place of Summerville paid off early, as the Sunderland forward scored after five minutes and again in the 17th minute.
Sweden, managed by Graham Potter, had won their opening game 5-1 against Tunisia but struggled defensively. Potter said after the match that his team would "learn a lot" from the defeat while noting the players kept going.
Gakpo extended the lead early in the second half before adding a fourth. Elanga pulled one back for Sweden, but Summerville completed the scoring late on.
Sweden next face Japan in Dallas, where a draw would improve their chances of advancing.
